Never heard of this before

I called up Midas to see if they carried a car sound cat for my '94 Integra GSR and the guy helping me said that he did have some in stock, but he wouldn't put it on unless my stock converter was damaged. He said it was somethin' like a $50,000 fine for the shop and a $20,000 fine for the customer if he put on the cat. If that's the case, then I should "damage" my stock cat. Is what he said true?

It's got to be damaged or the car has to have more than 50K miles on it. If you remove it and go into the shop without it then they shouldn't object to installing a new one. For all they know it was damaged from the engine running too rich. Then it's just your problem.

Midas carries CARSOUND cats? If thats true im going to go pick one up tommarow. Let me know if its true

As far as I know, that is the rule here in california, the cat has to be damaged or beyond a certain age for you to legally replace it with anything else. That's also the grounds for putting on an exhaust too, the last fixit i got for my exhaust, I just went to court, told the judge that my stock exhaust had been damaged and so I replaced it with one that was 50 state legal, and I got off with it. The code that most cops get you on now is for modifying your exhaust, which is illegal in Cali unless your original has been damaged, so that's what you guys should be telling the judges now.

PS - The muffler shop I go to carries Carsound cats too, if you guys need some I could always get them there and ship to you guys.

i just put it in myself...no hassle that way ...

my friends take their test pipes to muffler shops and just tell them they don't want receipts as proof of the deeds being done...most shops i've encountered are down with it.

Chargedtegra: carsound told me that the Midas shops here in Fremont, CA carry them and when I called Midas, they said they had them in stock.
